INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA – On Friday, June 29, 2018, the Fraternity’s Board of Directors, on behalf of the 48th House of Delegates, announced the passing of a new resolution aimed at enhancing the member experience and preserving the safety of chapters and their campus community.

After careful consideration and discussion, the 48th House of Delegates passed a resolution eliminating the use of hard-alcohol at fraternity events and fraternity facilities. The resolution specifies hard alcohol is prohibited from any chapter events and facilities unless served by a licensed third-party vendor. The resolution will take effect on September 1, 2019.

“This resolution allows our members to better focus on personal development, supporting our core vision to build noble generations of men. Alcohol abuse distracts from our vision — we need to embody our Principles, being leaders and positive influences in our communities,” 40th National President of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity Jim Johnston, Carnegie Mellon said. “I’m very proud our membership voted to be ahead of the curve and be leaders in the industry. It shows our member’s commitment to ensuring the mutual safety and wellness of each other.”

Since 1920, Sigma Tau Gamma has demonstrated a commitment to decisions based on our Principles, and to have the forward-thinking ideas of noble gentlemen. As leaders in this change, Sigma Tau Gamma is one of four fraternal groups to pass a resolution of this nature before the 2018 – 2019 academic school year began.

Not only is Sigma Tau Gamma taking strides to ensure our future endeavors, but the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) is taking the necessary steps for the long-term success of the fraternal world. On August 27, 2018, at the NIC Annual Meeting, 66 fraternal groups passed a new standard, prohibiting hard alcohol from fraternity chapter facilities and events. More than 6,100 chapters on 800 campuses will implement the new standard by September 1, 2019.

Our 98-year history has been member-focused and committed to serving as positive forces in men’s lives and the communities they call home. To build generations of noble men, we must continue to endeavor forward by making choices positively impacting the safety and wellness of our members.
