Chapter History
Founded on October 6th of 2011 by 35 men, the Epsilon Tau Chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma quickly began to build its legacy on the campus of UNC Charlotte. Before their chartering, the chapter’s efforts did not go unnoticed by Charlotte’s Greek Life community; receiving the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life Directors Award as well as the E. Kennedy Whitesitt Communications Award from the Headquarters of Sigma Tau Gamma.
After their chartering in 2013, the men of Epsilon Tau set out to complete the vision they set for themselves; to change the mainstream fraternity stereotype and make a real impact on campus. Epsilon Tau prides itself to recruit the very best men on campus from different backgrounds. In 2013, that approach was recognized when the chapter’s second president, Michael Tilley, won the Dent Man of the Year Award; the highest individual award that can be given to an undergraduate member of Sig Tau.
The brotherhood has always had its fair share of leaders spread throughout the campus that is involved in organizations such as Notice the Abuse, Kinesiology Club, Young Republicans, and the UNC Charlotte Sports Marketing Association. As the winner of the 2016 McCune Distinguished Chapter award, the chapter was recognized as the best Sig Tau Chapter in the nation. As their list of awards grows, their vision stays the same five years later; to break the mainstream stereotype that has poisoned Greek Life and make an impact on their campus. Their philanthropic work with the Special Olympics of North Carolina, Habitat for Humanity, and Operation Christmas Child allows the brothers to take a break from their studies and help those in need. Still a young chapter, the impact of Epsilon Tau on its brother’s lives and the surrounding community is one that cannot be found anywhere else.
Chapter Funds
A Chapter Fund is a restricted account from the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation. In this case, the restriction is that the funds and earnings on the investment of the funds may be used only for a particular chapter, meaning that if you donate to your chapter’s fund, it may only be used for your chapter.
Chapter Funds may be used to:
- Award scholarships based on academic and leadership criteria
- Technology grants for purchase and upgrade of chapter computer technology
- Educational facility grants to the selected chapter
- Leadership education grants for participation in institutes, seminars, and conventions.
The Foundation manages the fund. This management includes fund accounting, investing, and preparing required reports for the Internal Revenue Service. The policy of the Foundation Board of Trustees is to involve chapter alumni association leaders in the creation of criteria, formation of program priorities and selection of grant recipients.
