What is a fraternity?

A fraternity is a group of like-minded men who all share a set of values that guide their decisions and actions. Sharing these values is the basis of the brotherhood that they form together. These brotherhood bonds based on shared values are the essence the fraternity. The fraternity is a self-governed body led by the men, and the group of men participates in leadership development programs, social activities, brotherhood activities, and community service projects.

What are my son’s financial obligations to be a member of Sig Tau?

Once he has joined Sig Tau, your son will be expected to meet his financial obligations until he graduates from his university.

Chapters are also expected to create their operating budgets and collect semester dues from their members beyond the national fees. These semester dues are invested back into the chapter and its members and are typically used for activities such as leadership programs, social events, and philanthropy projects. Some semester dues will depend on the university where your son is a member.

Will Sig Tau get in the way of my son’s schoolwork?

Being part of Sig Tau requires a level of time commitment to get the most out of his fraternity experience, but the time commitment is not meant to interfere with your son’s academics. In fact, being involved with Sig Tau has shown an increase in graduation rates and a more positive college experience overall. Sig Tau helps to teach its members successful time management skills and looks to provide resources for your son to succeed academically by forming study groups, meeting other members in similar classes and majors, and recognizing and awarding superior academic performance.

What sort of leadership experience can Sig Tau give my son?

Sig Tau offers countless leadership opportunities for your son as soon as he commits to joining. Part of Sig Tau’s new member education program, Path of Principles, is solely dedicated to leadership development and shadowing chapter officers. There are also several annual leadership programs that Sig Tau offers to develop your son’s leadership skills and networking opportunities further.

Webb Academy is the original training program for new Chapter Presidents offered by a national fraternity. Today, it has grown to involve multiple officers of the Executive Board and is held in Kansas City, Missouri every January. It is an alcohol-free event and challenges each officer to live the values and principles of Sig Tau.

Grand Conclave occurs during the celebration of Sig Tau’s Founders Day in June on even-numbered years. During this event, undergraduate and alumni members come together to join in brotherhood, leadership development, and legislative business. Sig Tau’s Board of Directors elections and Constitution and Bylaw amendments are made by the delegates present. Outstanding chapters, members, and alumni are honored and celebrated for the year’s successes.

Endeavor Leadership Conference follows a similar structure to Grand Conclave and occurs during odd-numbered years. Sig Taus from across the nation can learn about national programs and develop strategies for addressing organization challenges and opportunities. The open exchange of ideas in a discussion-based format allows participants to play an active part in the planning and development of Sig Tau’s future.

Noble Man Institute, released in 2016, is Sig Tau’s regional leadership development program specifically designed for the newest initiates of the fraternity. During the weekend retreat at a licensed YMCA facility, participants can develop leadership and communication skills, build network connections with other members from their region, and learn about the responsibilities of a Sig Tau brother and alumni member involvement.

What is Sig Tau’s stance on hazing?

Sig Tau has a strict no hazing policy. Members of Sig Tau are taught to respect themselves and their fellow man, and hazing has no place in a Sig Tau chapter. No chapter, associate chapter, collegiate member or alumni member may conduct or condone hazing. Hazing activities are defined as, “Any activity taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, or ridicule.” Any chapter, member or alumni found responsible of hazing is immediately placed on suspension, and an investigation begins.

What is Sig Tau’s stance on alcohol or substance abuse?

Sig Tau’s Member Safety and Wellness Policy is clearly communicated to all members and new members before their commitment to joining their Sig Tau chapter.

The possession, use, and consumption of alcoholic beverages, while on chapter premises, during an official Sig Tau event, or in any situation or setting sponsored or endorsed by the chapter must be in compliance with any and all applicable laws of your state, county and city. Any members, associate members, chapters or alumni found to be in violation of this policy are subject to a hearing before the chapter Standards Board. If found responsible, the members, associate members, chapter or alumni could face suspension or expulsion from Sig Tau.

The possession, sale, and use of any illegal drug or controlled substance at any Sig Tau house or fraternity-sponsored event are strictly prohibited. Any members, associate members, chapters or alumni found to be in violation of this policy are subject to a hearing before the chapter Standards Board. If found responsible, the members, associate members, chapter or alumni could face suspension or expulsion from Sig Tau.

What is Sig Tau’s stance on diversity and inclusion?

Sig Tau chapters are dedicated to a values-based recruitment process that uses a set of measurable, objective guidelines for identifying potential new members. The six principles of Sig Tau serve as the guidelines for recruitment expectations. New members of Sig Tau are only evaluated based upon their qualities of Learning, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, Citizenship, and Brotherhood.

Membership in Sig Tau is open to all regularly enrolled male students of that university, without regard to race, color, genetic information, physical or mental disability, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, marital status, gender identity, or status as a U.S. Veteran.

Sigma Tau Gamma’s stance on diversity is below, as it is found in the Fraternity’s Constitution and By-laws, as voted on and approved by Sigma Tau Gamma’s Board of Directors.

“The value of such inclusiveness has never been greater given the rich diversity of our campuses and communities. Where inclusiveness is not about diversity for the sake of political correctness, but where inclusiveness is a values-based choice, a decision made because it is the right decision to make based on who we say we are as a brotherhood of men. Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity declares that our members have the opportunity to grow into better men by interacting with a diversity of Fraternity brothers, that our brotherhood is richer and stronger by having a diversity of membership, and that our members are better citizens when they embrace and celebrate diversity in their college and community. That Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity, both at the local and national level, is actively working to promote inclusiveness in our membership and will oppose all acts of harassment, and discrimination; and so, by the House of Delegates of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity that it is the continuing position of our Fraternity that membership privileges are open to any qualified man of character without consideration of ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability, national origin, age, family status, or cultural background.”

How can my son join Sig Tau?

To join Sig Tau, your son should contact the chapter on his campus. This way, he can get to know the members of the chapter and ask any questions he may still have about joining. If Sig Tau does not currently have a chapter on his campus, your son can become a Founding Father!
