The Grand Conclave: Shaping the Future of Sigma Tau Gamma

Published on April 28, 2026 in News

CARMEL, INDIANA – Every two years, Sigma Tau Gamma brings brothers together from across the country together for one of the most meaningful experiences in our Fraternity: Grand Conclave.

For some, it is a chance to reconnect. For others, it is their first look at Sigma Tau Gamma beyond the chapter level. At its core, Conclave is where members come together to make decisions that directly influence the future of the Fraternity.

What Is Grand Conclave

Grand Conclave serves as the official meeting of Sigma Tau Gamma’s legislative body, the House of Delegates.

During this time, undergraduate and alumni representatives gather to review, discuss, and vote on proposals that shape policies and programs,  and elect the next leaders of the Fraternity. It is a hands-on process that ensures members play an active role in guiding the organization forward.

Each chapter is represented by delegates who serve as voting members on its behalf. Chapters with 39 or fewer initiated members send two delegates, while those with 40 or more send three. In addition, alumni associations officially recognized by Sigma Tau Gamma Headquarters are also eligible to send a voting delegate.

This structure ensures that perspectives from across the Brotherhood are represented in the decisions that matter most.

A Legacy Built by Members

The impact of Conclave can be seen throughout Sigma Tau Gamma’s history.

Buz Barlow, former CEO and member of the Society of the Seventeen, attended his first Conclave in 1966 as a chapter president. That experience left a lasting impression, not only because of the connections he formed, but because of the significance of the decisions being made.

That gathering helped set in motion several important milestones, including the creation of the Sigma Tau Gamma Foundation and the launch of a national Leadership Institute, now known as Endeavor. These initiatives expanded the Fraternity’s ability to support members and invest in their development.

As Buz has reflected, progress like this only happens through the ideas and actions of delegates working together to move the organization forward.

Leadership in Action

That same member-driven approach continues today.

Mike Van Camp (42nd National President) points to the 2018 Conclave in Phoenix as a defining moment in recent history. During that meeting, delegates made the decision to remove hard alcohol from chapter houses and events, prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of members.

What stood out most was the leadership shown by undergraduate delegates, who led much of the conversation with a focus on responsibility and long-term impact. The outcome reflected a commitment to ensuring that brotherhood experiences remain both meaningful and safe.

That decision continues to influence Sigma Tau Gamma today and serves as a strong example of how thoughtful legislation can create lasting change.

More Than Meetings

While the House of Delegates is central to Conclave, the experience extends well beyond legislation.

Brothers who are not participating in the House of Delegates can take part in the Brotherhood Track, designed for both undergraduate and alumni brothers who want to grow personally and professionally. These experience will provide opportunities to build skills, exchange ideas, and connect with members from across the country in a collaborative environment.

It is this combination of leadership, learning, and connection that makes conclave such a well-rounded experience.
