Gamma Chi Chapter Braves Low Temperatures to Raise Funds for Special Olympics

CARMEL, INDIANA – With temperatures around nine degrees and wind chills below zero, members of Sigma Tau Gamma’s Gamma Chi Chapter completed their annual “Grundy Run” across Michigan Technological University’s campus on February 6, wearing only underwear and shoes as part of a fundraiser for Special Olympics.

Thirty-four members took part in the 0.8-mile run from a campus academic building to the fraternity house, with two alumni and the chapter’s White Rose also participating. Before the start, runners covered themselves in fraternity letters and donor submitted messages, which supporters wrote when making online contributions.

The chapter raised nearly $6,000 through this year’s event, continuing its tradition of supporting athletes through Special Olympics. For the first time, proceeds will be split evenly between the national organization and Special Olympics Area 39, a newly established local chapter. A representative from Special Olympics Area 39 attended the event with a Special Olympics banner, highlighting plans for a growing relationship with the Gamma Chi Chapter. The Gamma Chi Chapter president shared they are exploring future opportunities for collaboration, including volunteer involvement with coaching local athletes.

The Grundy Run has become one of Gamma Chi’s largest philanthropic efforts. Promotion for the event included social media outreach, alumni engagement, and on‑campus advertising. Donations remain open as the chapter works to reach and potentially exceed its $6,000 goal. To make an online donation and support the chapter’s fundraising efforts, visit the link below.

Beyond their philanthropic success, the chapter also recently earned several fraternity and sorority life awards for member achievement and overall performance. Ethan Diehl was awarded Fraternity Member of the Year, and Nathan Quast received Outstanding Fraternity Man of the Year. The chapter was recognized with Most Improved Fraternity Fall Chapter GPA and the Chancellor’s Cup, while advisor Paul Szczesny was honored as Advisor of the Year. These awards show the chapter’s commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and service both on campus and in the community.
