CARMEL, INDIANA – Sterling Breed, Chi Chapter ’56, Western Michigan University, passed to the Chapter Eternal on February 20th. Sigma Tau Gamma’s 13th National President, Brother Breed served in that capacity from 1964-1966. At the time of his death, he was the oldest among all those surviving who had held that highest honor.

After achieving Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, he settled in on the Kalamazoo campus to direct the University Counseling Center for a time and then as an esteemed member of the faculty for 34 years, retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 1991. Sterling was awarded the University’s Distinguished Service Award and the Michigan Legislature passed a Resolution honoring him for his service to and impact on the entire State.

Brother Breed became a member of the Wilson C. Morris Fellowship last year and was awarded the WCMF Medallion during a ceremony at his home in Pine Hurst, North Carolina. National CEO W.P. “Buz” Barlow, Jr., JD, Beta Mu ’64, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, reminisced,

“I met Sterling Breed for the first time as a young Chapter President attending a Regional Conference at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. His demeanor, command of the event, and physical presence forever defined for me what it meant to be a real fraternity man and I’ve never forgotten that. His term as National President immediately preceded a time of great growth for Sig Tau and for that, our Brotherhood owes him deep respect and gratitude.”
