Alpha Omega Chapter Cleans Up the Streets

CARMEL, INDIANA – What does it take to make a visible impact in a local community? For the brothers of the Alpha Omega Chapter at Missouri University of Science and Technology, the answer is with a pair of gloves, a few trash bags, and a mile-long stretch of roadway.

On March 7, 12 brothers from the Alpha Omega Chapter gathered along North Rolla Street in Rolla, Missouri, to complete a street cleanup. The chapter has adopted the roadway through the city’s Adopt‑A‑Street program, committing to clean the nearly one-mile stretch twice each year, becoming a consistent tradition for the chapter’s community service efforts.

Over the course of two hours, the brothers worked their way along the entire street, collecting litter and leaving the area noticeably cleaner for the local community. Together, the group contributed 24 total service hours and collected six bags of trash during the effort.

Setting up the partnership with the city was straightforward. The chapter maintains an agreement with the city of Rolla that is renewed every three years, allowing them to continue caring for the same roadway. When the agreement was most recently renewed, the chapter expanded the project to cover the entirety of North Rolla Street, increasing the impact of the cleanup.

The initiative has even inspired others on campus. After seeing the success of the chapter’s efforts, members of the Missouri S&T’s Interfraternity Council have begun exploring their own adopted street initiative. For the Alpha Omega Chapter, the cleanup is more than just a service project, but a way to live the Fraternity’s values while giving back to their community.
